When does the sunset sequence at Twilight Epiphany start this Saturday? Around 5:20 p.m. Houston's sunset on Nov. 7 is at 5:30 p.m., and the light sequence at James Turrell's Skyspace starts about 10 minutes before sunset and runs about 40 minutes. That puts the last of the light at roughly 6 p.m. The Shepherd School's Spotlight: Bartók 3 starts at 7:30 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall. The Skyspace pavilion stands beside Alice Pratt Brown Hall, home of the Shepherd School.
Daylight saving time ended on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 a.m., which moved every Houston sunset an hour earlier on the clock. On the Rice campus, that hour turned two separate evening events into one plan. For the rest of November, the free light sequence and the Shepherd School's 7:30 p.m. performances no longer overlap, and dinner fits between them.
The Skyspace Came Back This Fall With New Lights
Twilight Epiphany sits in the Suzanne Deal Booth Centennial Pavilion next to the Shepherd School of Music. It closed temporarily while Asha and Farid Virani Hall, the new Rice Business building, went up nearby. Rice News reported that the Moody Center for the Arts used the closure to replace the original light fixtures with a modern LED system and updated controls, installed under the supervision of Turrell's studio. The pavilion reopened to the public on Sept. 15, which the Rice Thresher confirmed in its Sept. 21 report.
Built in 2012, the pavilion seats 120 people on two levels and is the only two-story Skyspace among the more than 100 Turrell has made. During each sequence, light plays across the ceiling and through the opening in the 72-foot-square knife-edge roof. Joel Thompson, deputy director of the Moody, told Rice News that the Skyspace drew an estimated 20,000 visitors a year before it closed, and added:
"For Houstonians, it's a part of the city's identity, and for art enthusiasts around the world, it's a beacon that brings them to Rice University for a singular experience."
Admission is free and no reservation is needed. The pavilion is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. On weekdays, Rice student docents hired by the Moody greet visitors during the sunset sequence and answer questions about Turrell's work. Groups larger than 10, or visitors who need assistance, can contact [email protected] ahead of time. The pavilion is not available for proposals, weddings or personal photo and video shoots.
How the Clock Change Moved the Sunset Sequence
Rice asks sunset visitors to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to get a seat. Using Houston's November sunset times, a typical sunset visit this month looks like this:
- Arrive around 5 p.m. Seats fill first, and the pavilion holds 120 people.
- The sequence starts between about 5:10 and 5:20 p.m., depending on the date. Sunset is at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, 5:26 p.m. on Nov. 13 and 14, 5:23 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 22, and 5:21 p.m. on Nov. 30.
- It ends around 5:50 to 6 p.m., about 40 minutes after it starts.
- The Shepherd School's evening recitals start at 7:30 p.m., which leaves time for dinner before the music.
The clock change also has a downside. Shepherd's 5 p.m. recitals now land almost exactly on the sunset sequence. That includes the free Shepherd Wind Faculty recital tonight, Thursday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. in Duncan Recital Hall. If you want both, the 7:30 p.m. recital is the one that fits. Tonight that's Nathaniel Parker, violin, also in Duncan Recital Hall.
Ticketing works the same way all month. The Shepherd School says most of its events are free, including student, class and faculty recitals. Symphony and opera productions require tickets, and orchestra tickets start at $5. Events without a ticket marker are general admission, with first-come seating.
The November Evenings Where Everything Lines Up
Most nights in November have a 7:30 p.m. recital, but a few dates line up better than the rest. Sequence times below are approximate, based on the sunset time and Rice's guidance that the sequence starts about 10 minutes before sunset.

|---|---|---|---|---|

The Chamber Music Festival weekend
The Fall 2026 Chamber Music Festival is the longest run of free music this month, all in Duncan Recital Hall at Alice Pratt Brown Hall. It has sessions at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13; at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14; and at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15. Every session is free and general admission. On Friday and Saturday, the 7:30 p.m. sessions follow the sunset sequence. On Sunday, the music ends before sunset, so the order flips and the Skyspace comes last.
Sunday, Nov. 15 can also start earlier. The Rice Village Farmers Market runs on the first and third Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kelvin Drive and Amherst Street, and Nov. 15 is one of those Sundays. Put the market, the 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. festival session and the 5:15 p.m. sequence together, and Sunday is a full day without leaving the area.
Two afternoons that end at the Skyspace
The Moody's New Art / New Music on Saturday, Nov. 21 is a student performance in the Moody galleries from 3 to 5 p.m. It ends about 15 minutes before that evening's sequence starts. The next afternoon, Sunday, Nov. 22, the Campanile Orchestra plays Stude Concert Hall at 4 p.m. Admission is free, but you need a ticket. Sunset that day is at 5:23 p.m.
For a meal on campus, Houstonia reported that Trill Burgers opened at Rice Memorial Center on Aug. 17.
What's on the Walls During the Day
On weekday afternoons and Saturdays, the Moody galleries add an hour or two of art before the sunset sequence. The galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday, Monday and holidays. Admission is free. Because they close at 5 p.m., a gallery visit flows straight into the sunset sequence.
- Radiant Geometries: Vectors of Knowledge from the Indigenous Americas runs through Dec. 19. The artists include Nanibah Chacon, Melissa Cody, Jordan Ann Craig, Patricia Domínguez, Sara Flores, Suzanne Kite, Patrick Martinez, Cisco Merel, Caroline Monnet, Natalia Montoya Lecaros and Eamon Ore-Giron.
- The Tent Series shows work by Keliy Anderson-Staley, Preston Gaines and Dario Robleto through July 31, 2027.
- Off the Wall: Steffani Jemison, Untitled (Same Time / black bird) is at Brochstein Pavilion through Sept. 11, 2027.
- Platform: Sharmistha Ray, Entangled Portals is at the east entrance of Fondren Library through Jan. 29, 2027.
The Moody's Artists-in-Dialogue program on Thursday, Nov. 12 runs from 6 to 8 p.m., so it starts just after that evening's sunset sequence ends. Moody describes its public events as free and open to the public. Since the galleries close on holidays, plan any Thanksgiving-week gallery visit for a day other than the holiday itself.
Parking for a Two-Stop Evening
A two-stop evening can mean two hours or more on campus, so the parking cap matters. Rice Parking lists West Lot 2, the Moody Lot and the Central Campus Garage at $1 per 10 minutes, with a $13 maximum per exit. The Greenbriar Lot costs a flat $4 per exit. West Lot 2 is close to the Shepherd School, and so close to the Skyspace too. At $1 per 10 minutes, a stay from 5 p.m. to after a 7:30 p.m. recital reaches the $13 cap, which makes the flat-rate Greenbriar Lot the cheaper choice for a long evening.
Payment is the other thing to know. Surface lots take credit cards only, while the Central and BRC garages take credit cards or cash. At gated lots and garages, use the same card going in and coming out, and the charge is billed when you exit. The North and Lovett North lots open to visitors from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, at the same $1-per-10-minutes rate. Arriving at 5 p.m. on a weekday is too early for those two lots, so on weekdays the Central Campus Garage or West Lot 2 is the better fit.
