River Oaks Has New Places to Start the Morning This Fall, and One French Bakery Is Still on Its Way

Between late August and mid-September, three new morning spots opened around River Oaks: a New York bagel shop, a cafe inside the Ismaili Center and a Mediterranean market. They open at three different hours and close on different days. A fourth, a French bakery in River Oaks District that plans to open at 6 a.m., is still behind construction paper. So breakfast this fall depends on two things, the time and the day of the week, and the spots don't all follow the same weekly schedule.

Six O'Clock Belongs to Westheimer

H&H Bagels opened its first Texas location on Sept. 10 at 2850 Westheimer Road. The Houston Chronicle reported its regular hours as 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. That makes it the earliest of this fall's openings by two hours. The brand's own site now lists Houston as open.

The shop is run by franchisee Noman Khan, who the Chronicle describes as a native New Yorker who has lived in Houston for more than a decade. According to the same report, the brand has turned up in "Sex and the City," "Seinfeld" and "The Office." The Chronicle also placed the opening in a bigger trend: H&H arrived three months after Houston got its first PopUp Bagels, as more New York-style shops come into the city.

The 3 p.m. close shapes the day as much as the 6 a.m. start does. H&H is built for mornings and an early lunch. After mid-afternoon, the next stop on this list is a few miles north on Allen Parkway.

Eight O'Clock Runs on the Ismaili Center's Schedule

On Sept. 8, the Ismaili Center at 2323 Allen Parkway opened a street-level, all-day cafe called Tapestry. It's run with Jackson & Company, an event production and catering firm. Community Impact reported that the space is about 2,000 square feet and seats up to 70 guests, with more seating outside near the Center's gardens designed by Thomas Woltz.

The cafe's hours line up exactly with the building's. Community Impact listed them as 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and on Sunday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed Mondays. The Ismaili Center's visitor page gives the same schedule for the Center, and says admission to the building and gardens is free and open to the community. In practice, coffee here comes with free access to the gardens and galleries, and both run on the same weekly rhythm, Mondays off included.

The morning menu reported by Community Impact draws on several cuisines:

  • Pastries such as pistachio baklava croissants, raspberry rose, cinnamon-cardamom scones with maple glaze, and chai snickerdoodles
  • Breakfast plates including shakshuka, egg bhurji croissants, beef kolaches and breakfast tacos on flaky paratha
  • Drinks such as house-made masala chai, teh tarik, mango lassis, specialty coffees and lemongrass-lychee lemonade

In the opening release quoted by Community Impact, project manager Sébastien Laval pictured guests "enjoying the gardens after a walk along Buffalo Bayou, exploring the Center's exhibitions or attending one of its many public programs." Those programs have dates. The Center's current gallery exhibition, "Article," runs through January 10, 2027. The Center also offers free 45-minute guided tours of its architecture, artwork and outdoor spaces during operating hours. The Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 this year.

Of the new morning spots, this is the only one open until 9 p.m., and only on Fridays and Saturdays. On those days, a cafe that serves 8 a.m. scones also works for dinner.

Taha Market Already Changed Its Hours

Taha Market opened on Aug. 21 at 2621 South Shepherd Drive in Upper Kirby. In its launch coverage, the Houston Chronicle reported hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The market's current official listing shows a new schedule for Suite 140:

  1. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  2. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  3. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The weekday start moved an hour later, and the market added Sundays. It's now the only one of the three new spots open seven days a week, though its 10 a.m. start makes it more of a late breakfast or lunch stop.

Married owners Ziad and Sabrina Taha built the business from the farmers market up. The Chronicle reported that by late 2021 they were selling toum, a Middle Eastern garlic spread, at the Urban Harvest Farmers Market and regularly selling out. In 2023 they added toum and hummus to Central Market's shelves. The store took inspiration from Phoenicia Specialty Foods and the Cottage Grocery. The couple's idea is that customers stop in for an Arabic coffee brewed in hot sand, have lunch and leave with a ready-to-heat dinner.

The dinner part is the market's real use. According to the Chronicle, the freezers hold prepared Mediterranean dishes such as makloba, an upside-down rice dish layered with meat and fried vegetables, along with dolma and a Greek-style lasagna. The dine-in menu includes fattoush, chicken shawarma, falafel and a grilled cheese n'Za'atar made with halloumi. "It's an area that needs a Mediterranean spot," Ziad told the Houston Chronicle.

The 6 A.M. French Bakery Hasn't Opened Yet

The opening most likely to shift the neighborhood's early-morning options is still coming. Café Feuillette, the bakery founded by French baker and pastry chef Jean-François Feuillette, is coming to River Oaks District at 4444 Westheimer, Suite D145. In August, DiningOut reported it would be the brand's first location outside France and its fifth café worldwide. The outlet said it would open daily at 6 a.m. at the corner of Bettis and Westcreek.

If it keeps that schedule, it will match H&H's 6 a.m. start from inside the District. Its bakery case is planned around éclairs, Paris-Brest, canelés, filled madeleines, vanilla flan, chocolate-covered "Nounours" marshmallows and the signature Brioche Feuillette, with breakfast rolls, salads, sandwiches and "pastry drinks" based on French desserts.

The timing has moved before. In December 2025, Community Impact reported a summer 2026 opening. By August, DiningOut was reporting November. As of late October, the River Oaks District listing still reads "opening fall 2026" and "opening soon," with no date posted. For now, check that page before planning a morning around it.

Which Door Is Open, Day by Day

Taken together, the schedules show a pattern. At 7 a.m., H&H on Westheimer is the only one of the fall's new openings with published hours that early. By 8 a.m., the Ismaili Center's cafe and gardens are open, except on Mondays. Taha Market opens at 10. Here is how the two spots with day-by-day schedules split the week:

Day Ismaili Center cafe Taha Market
Monday Closed 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

H&H isn't in the table because its 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours were published as regular hours, without a breakdown by day. Check the shop's site before a weekend or Monday run. On Mondays, Taha Market is the only one of the three with confirmed hours, because the Ismaili Center and its cafe are closed.

Next up on the near-term calendar is Saturday, Nov. 21, when River Oaks District holds its annual tree lighting from 4 to 7 p.m., with Santa's arrival and the tree illumination. A Saturday that starts at the Ismaili Center gardens at 8 can end at the tree lighting, a couple of hours before the Center's cafe closes at 9.
